What is the Rural Service Centre?
The Rural Service Centre is a locally owned, not-for-profit veterinary clinic and country store based in Tākaka, serving Golden Bay. It exists to support the community and locals whose livelihoods depend on animals, by providing practical veterinary care, reliable supplies and locally relevant advice.
What does "locally owned and not for profit" mean?
RSC was founded in 1952 by local farming families who recognised that strong, locally based veterinary and rural services were essential to animal welfare, farm viability, and community resilience. Rather than relying on distant or externally owned providers, they created a community-owned organisation that could respond directly to local needs.
For over seven decades, RSC has continued to serve that purpose, adapting over time while staying grounded in its original reason for existing.
How does RSC support the wider Golden Bay community?
RSC is not-for-profit, so when you shop with us or use our vet services, that money stays right here in the Bay.
Any surplus goes back into community grants, farmer support and local initiatives. That might look like helping a local group with funding, backing an event, supporting schools and clubs, or providing practical support to families and farms when seasons get tight.
We also keep essential services local. Our retail store, agronomy support and vet clinic mean people do not have to head over the hill for everyday needs. That saves time, keeps jobs in the Bay and strengthens the backbone of our rural community.
Shopping local with RSC is one small way people help keep Golden Bay strong, season to season.
How do community groups apply for funding or support?
RSC offers a Community Grant twice a year. We distribute $8,000 each round to cultural, charitable, sporting, educational and community groups and organisations across Golden Bay.
When applications open, we advertise it locally and online so everyone knows the window is open.
When the round is open, application forms can be collected from the Country Store during shop hours, or you can contact our Grants Coordinator, Victoria, for a copy and more details.
